 World Civ. Syllabus

Mr. Weimer / Derek.weimer@boone.kyschools.us / 859.384.5040 x2604 / 5th period planning

Description: This course will trace the development of humankind from the Renaissance (1450) and end with the present times. These topics will be covered through class lectures, guided reading, review sheets, primary and secondary source readings, maps, and class discussions.  This forum will emphasize critical thinking skills, open response writing, map and note taking skills to help you prepare for the rest of high school and college years. The students will leave the class having a better understanding about the “how’s” and “why’s” of the world they live in. We will use lecture notes, subject readings, and our textbook to cover the material.

Textbook: Modern World History, McDougal Littel, 2007 / each student will sign for a textbook that will remain in the classroom. I will have an internet site address for using the book online from home very soon.

Grading procedures: Grades will be determined by the total points accumulated through homework, flashback quizzes, exit slips, writing assignments, NOTES GRADE, and chapter tests. At all times, students must come to class prepared and ready to learn.  Homework is due the day after it is assigned at the start of class.  Late papers will receive half credit and will not be accepted after the unit test is taken. Please make sure all absences are excused so you have make up work privileges.

World Civ. Binder: Students are required to maintain a social studies binder of all notes and class work. This binder will be worth points and will be collected and graded at test time. It will be your study guide for tests and for your comprehensive final exam. I will encourage your parents to examine your folder so that they are aware of what we are studying and the progress you are making in class. Parents and students are also encouraged to contact me by email regarding any questions concerning this class. I will check my email daily and return a message to you as quickly as possible.
